From angle grinder to smart finishing: Zuidberg gives post-processing a major boost

With the purchase of a SER1200 Multibrush finishing machine and a DS600 slag removal machine from Q-Fin, Zuidberg has significantly upgraded the post-processing of cut parts. The investment has resulted in less manual work, higher and more consistent quality, and a substantial increase in productivity. The employees in the finishing department are very satisfied: they no longer have to rely on manual grinding with an angle grinder. Components Sales Manager Johan Bakker is equally pleased, as he sees customers becoming increasingly demanding when it comes to quality.

The 3-metre batch table at the front of the SER1200 Multibrush enables parts to be finished in batches. On the left are Zuidberg employees. From left to right: Toon van Steenoven, Manager Process Engineering; Kenroy Simmons, Operator; and Alwin Boer, Team Manager Cutting, Bending and Finishing. On the right side of the table are Patrick van Scherpenseel and Stef van der Zanden from Q-Fin.

Zuidberg develops and manufactures transmission systems, front linkage systems, track systems and power take-off systems for sectors including agriculture, transport and infrastructure. Engineering, production, sales and service are all located at a single site in Ens, the Netherlands. This results in short communication lines and maximum synergy.

Complete component manufacturing

In its Components facility, Zuidberg produces both steel components for its own products and parts for external customers across a wide range of industries. Around 40 percent of production is intended for Zuidberg’s own organisation, while the remaining 60 percent is supplied to external customers. This often involves cutting and bending work, but Zuidberg is also increasingly focusing on welded assemblies.

“We want to expand our offering of complete component manufacturing,” says Bakker. “We bring all the knowledge we have to our customers, working together to create a high-quality product that can be manufactured efficiently. The new finishing solution will help us achieve that. For example, it allows us to create the perfect edge rounding for a high-quality weld.”

The SER1200 is used almost exclusively for processing steel parts in a wide variety of shapes and thicknesses ranging from 1 to 140 mm. Thanks to the new machine, manual grinding with an angle grinder has largely become a thing of the past.

Looking for an automated solution

Zuidberg has several cutting technologies available in its Components facility: laser, plasma and oxy-fuel cutting. A grinding line was already in place for post-processing, but it was not suitable for every type of cut part. As a result, many products still had to be manually deburred and edge-rounded using an angle grinder.

This prompted Zuidberg to look for an automated solution. The search led the company to Q-Fin in Bergeijk. Extensive practical tests were carried out using a pallet full of different products – ranging from thick oxy-fuel cut blocks to fine laser-cut parts and plasma-cut parts in various material thicknesses.

Alwin Boer, Team Manager Cutting, Bending and Finishing, and Toon van Steenoven, Manager Process Engineering, were immediately convinced by the performance of the SER1200 Multibrush. “The speed of the machine was impressive, and it achieved the required quality in a single pass,” says Boer. “It also turned out that the machine is capable of much more than we currently need. We were looking for a solution for breaking sharp edges and achieving an R1 edge radius, but the machine effortlessly produced a radius of 3.6 mm. We do not need that at the moment, but it certainly gives us additional possibilities for the future.”

Finishing in batches

Zuidberg opted for a SER1200 Multibrush equipped with a 3-metre batch table on both the infeed and outfeed side. This allows parts to be fed through the machine automatically and makes batch finishing possible. In addition, a DS600 slag removal machine was purchased. This machine is installed separately, as it is used exclusively for removing metal slag from plasma- and oxy-fuel-cut parts, while the SER1200 is used primarily for laser-cut products. By positioning both machines separately, the production flow remains as efficient as possible.

The SER1200 Multibrush is an all-in-one finishing machine for deburring, edge rounding up to Radius 3+, and applying either a linear or non-directional finish to sheet metal parts up to 1,200 mm wide. Zuidberg opted for a SER1200 Multibrush with magnetic hold-down. This enables the company to achieve a Radius 3+ on both internal and external contours in a single pass, while also reaching the customer-required Radius 1 at very high processing speeds.

The DS600 slag removal machine is installed separately, as it is used exclusively for removing metal slag from plasma- and oxy-fuel-cut parts, while the SER1200 is used primarily for laser-cut products.

Quickly familiar with the machine

The machines were installed in June. During commissioning, the employees immediately received comprehensive training, followed shortly afterwards by a second instruction session. “We make sure the operators learn how to use the machines effectively and achieve the best possible results,” says Patrick van Scherpenseel, Sales Manager Benelux at Q-Fin.

This approach quickly paid off. Shortly after installation, the operators were already creating new programs independently. A number of employees have extended access rights to create and modify programs, while other users can only select existing programs. This keeps the machine settings controlled and easy to manage.

Less grinding, more production

The SER1200 is used almost exclusively for processing steel parts in a wide variety of shapes and thicknesses ranging from 1 to 140 mm. The employees are very satisfied with the machine. Manual grinding with an angle grinder is physically demanding, tiring and creates a great deal of dust and noise. Thanks to the new machine, this has largely become a thing of the past.

Boer is also enthusiastic about the results. “Previously, three employees were grinding all week across two shifts. Thanks to this automation, we now need two fewer people for this work, and they can be deployed elsewhere. At the same time, we achieve a better final result and can process more cut parts.”

According to Bakker, the investment also offers commercial benefits. “Better edge rounding creates a better welded joint. An R2 radius also allows paint to flow more evenly and adhere better. And because we can round edges up to R3, we can offer even more possibilities to our customers.”

With this investment, Zuidberg has created a strong foundation for further optimisation of its production process. The machine is prepared for control via the ERP system, while loading and unloading can be further automated in the future. Integration with AGVs is also possible.

“That is also typical of Q-Fin,” says Van Scherpenseel. “Our solutions are modular and can be expanded over time, allowing customers to spread their investments.”

For Zuidberg, however, those developments are still for the future. Toon van Steenoven explains: “First, we want to fully master all the settings and programming. But it is good to know that this finishing solution still offers plenty of room for further expansion.”
